Sustainable urban mobility
The transport sector in NRW offers great potential for reducing CO2 emissions. With a call for funding, the state is supporting measures to design a sustainable and modern transport system in urban areas.
The transport sector plays a central role on the path to a climate-neutral transformation of the economy and everyday life. In North Rhine-Westphalia, transport accounts for around 15 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions - 90 percent of which are caused by road traffic as a whole, 65 percent of which are caused by car traffic alone. The funding announcement "Sustainable urban mobility for all" is intended to support the creation of a modern and sustainable transport system that contributes to lower emissions, better air quality and greater road safety in urban centers and surrounding areas. Around 52 million euros in EU and state funding is available for this at the start.
Measures based on municipal or regional mobility plans are eligible for funding. The measures must include the reorganization of transport in favour of climate and environmentally friendly mobility or spatial and digital networking and must belong to at least one of the following subject areas:
- Redesign and redistribution of space and infrastructure used for mobility and logistics in favour of safe, sustainable and networked mobility solutions
- Seamless and optimized routes through digital networking, integration and control
- Contribution to the nationwide or accelerated implementation and use of innovative sustainable mobility solutions
- Accompanying measures to enhance public spaces and optimize the use of space and infrastructure
