Business founders and start-ups

The "Grüne Gründungen.NRW" call for funding supports start-ups that want to combine economic success with positive ecological or social effects.

Start-ups with a positive impact on the environment and society are in vogue: the Green Startup Monitor 2022 by the Borderstep Institute and the German Startups Association shows that three quarters of founders in Germany consider it important to achieve a positive ecological or social impact with their company. At the same time, the report reveals considerable obstacles for green start-ups, for example in the area of capital acquisition.

The funding measure is intended to help raise the economic and ecological potential of green start-ups in the state and at the same time raise North Rhine-Westphalia's profile as an innovation location for green start-ups. The aim of the call is in particular to support innovations from start-ups in the eight submarkets of the environmental economy:

  • Environmentally friendly energy conversion, transportation and storage
  • Energy efficiency and energy saving
  • Materials, material efficiency and resource management
  • Environmentally friendly mobility
  • Water management
  • Mitigation and protection technologies
  • Sustainable timber and forestry
  • Environmentally friendly agriculture

The development and testing of prototypes is funded, whereby prototypes are understood to mean an initial version of a product or process intended for testing and further development prior to series production. These can be technical (e.g. mechanical) solutions as well as process innovations and digital applications (e.g. control software, apps).
