REGIONALE East Westphalia-Lippe
The REGIONALE Ostwestfalen-Lippe call was looking for projects that promote mobility, research and innovation as well as digitalization in the region. Three projects were selected for funding.
The economic and cultural region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) is organizing the REGIONALE 2022 under the heading "We are shaping the new UrbanLand". The REGIONALE is a structural funding instrument in NRW for implementing regional development strategies and structurally effective projects. "7 solutions from OWL for a good life" form the backbone of the UrbanLand strategy and are an expression of the results of the REGIONALE in OWL to date. They offer answers to the region's key challenges: safe and easy accessibility with networked mobility, innovation impetus for excellent education and professional development, vibrant districts and communities, strong living spaces between urban and rural areas, secure services of general interest and healthcare as well as an attractive region that can be experienced overall.
Connected mobility and digital applications
The "REGIONALE Ostwestfalen-Lippe" call is specifically intended to fund projects that focus on the "Intelligent, networked mobility" and "Innovation competence" clusters in the central fields of action "The new mobility" and "The new SME" as well as the cross-cutting topic of "Digitalization" of the REGIONALE OWL. Funding will be provided for the expansion of infrastructure in the area of research and innovation (R&I) and capacities for the development of R&I excellence:
- Field of action "The new mobility": Demand-oriented mobility services for the so-called last mile as a supplement to local public transport, development and model testing of innovative vehicles on rail or in rail-road networks as part of networked mobility in passenger and goods transport, automation on rail in freight and passenger transport, digital assistance and guidance systems in the field of mobility
- Field of action "The new SME": Tapping into research and business potential in future topics such as health by forming new innovation and research alliances
Background on contributions from the fields of action can be found at Strategy paper "UrbanLand OstWestfalenLippe - Die Navigation

Campus train at the Innovation Campus Lemgo
A campus railroad is being realized at the Innovation Campus Lemgo. The MONOCAB OWL, an automated monorail vehicle currently under development, is making it possible. The MONOCAB is currently being tested on the single-track test route between Lemgo and Extertal. Preparations can now be made for regular operation on the campus with numerous facilities for education, research, business and trade. To this end, an initial section with a maintenance hall will be completed by 2025. This will allow future partners for series production or buyers to experience the demonstrator in action. The Technische Hochschule is carrying out the project together with its associated partners, the Fraunhofer Institute IOSB-INA and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. MONOCAB OWL is an EFRE.NRW-funded project of REGIONALE 2022.
Digital train station Minden
The station of the future is being built in Minden. The RailCampus OWL, an innovation ecosystem for intelligent rail technology currently under development on the right bank of the Weser and also a REGIONALE 2022 project, is making this possible. The aim of the "Digitaler Bahnhof Minden" project is to provide users with limited mobility with a service robot. The robot accompanies passengers on their journey at the station, provides orientation and safety and will even take care of their luggage. Rail passengers and students are directly involved in the development of the RailCampus. Bielefeld University, Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Paderborn University are carrying out the project in collaboration with DB Station & Service and the city of Minden.
AuToRail OWL - Automated Transport of Road and Rail Goods
The "AuToRail Automated Transport of Road and Rail Goods" project is developing an automated platform for transporting goods and, in the long term, people by rail and road. The vision is a rail vehicle that can also drive automatically on the road. The main aim of the project is to automate driving and switching from road to rail and vice versa with minimal loss of time and without infrastructure measures. For companies, this enables attractive, ecologically sustainable freight transport that allows a switch from truck to rail, even without an expensive rail connection. To this end, a test route is being set up at Kaunitz station in Verl. The project is being carried out by Bielefeld University in collaboration with Bielefeld University, Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences and Verler Immobilien- und Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH.
