The innovation competition "GreenEconomy.IN.NRW" promotes creative solutions to the challenges of climate change - and relies on the innovation potential of small and medium-sized enterprises to achieve this.

Utilizing the innovation potential of NRW as a strong business location for climate and environmental protection - that is the goal of the "GreenEconomy.IN.NRW" innovation competition. NRW is already the largest provider of environmental technologies in Germany. The innovation competition aims to support small and medium-sized companies in particular in developing innovative ideas for a sustainable transformation of the economy. Funding is provided for cooperation projects in the areas of climate and environmental protection, resource conservation, circular value creation and strengthening climate resilience.

Participation is open to cooperative research, innovation and development projects in the pre-competitive area from the following subject areas:

  • Environmental economy: Innovations that contribute to the development of environmentally friendly, climate-friendly, resource-saving products, processes and services
  • Circular economy: Innovations with the aim of saving resources and developing circular products and business models
  • Climate adaptation: innovative projects to increase climate resilience

Innovation funding in ERDF.NRW 2021-2027 will be implemented via a total of six innovation competitions, which are derived from the innovation fields of the Regional Innovation Strategy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (RIS). The competition is based on a broad understanding of innovation that includes both technical and non-technical innovations.

The third round of the competition is aimed in particular at innovative, new and pioneering projects with significant economic potential for the EU internal market that meet the objectives of the new EU initiative "Strategic Technologies for Europe" (STEP) or help to reduce the European Union's dependencies. They should support the development or production of critical technologies (digital technologies and technology-intensive innovations, environmentally friendly or resource-efficient technologies and biotechnologies) or secure corresponding value chains in the European Union.

The deadline for the first submission round was 18.04.2023 (expired). The deadline for the second submission round was 18.01.2024 (expired). The deadline for the third submission round was 28.10.2024 (expired).

The "GreenEconomy.IN.NRW" innovation competition has a two-stage procedure. Project outlines can be submitted via the website www.in.nrw/green-economy. Please take advantage of the advice offered by the NRW Innovation Promotion Agency in advance.

Results

In the first round of submissions, which ended on February 18, 2023, 26 projects were recommended for funding, which can now apply for a total of around 34 million euros for their projects.

In the second submission round of the "GreenEconomy.IN.NRW" innovation competition from October 18, 2023 to January 18, 2024, a total of 35 outlines were submitted by 115 interested parties.

Recovery of activated carbon particles from insitu adsorption barriers for resource-efficient remediation of PFAS-contaminated groundwater

Insitu processes are used for PFAS remediation of groundwater. A frequently mentioned point of criticism regarding the suitability of these processes is the long-term handling of the PFAS-laden barriers after the remediation target or the adsorption capacity has been reached. In AquaCarb, a technological solution to this problem is to be identified in laboratory tests and tested in a pilot field trial.

Liamocins and rhamnolipids for foliar fertilization, plant strengthening and promotion of beneficial microorganisms

The project is aimed at the microbial production of products from the liamocins (Lia) and rhamnolipids (RL) group of substances. They are effective adjuvants for foliar fertilizers and replace substances that are difficult to degrade (e.g. EDTA) and synthetic surfactants with the same level of effectiveness. Accumulations in ecosystems and risks due to carcinogenicity are avoided. The project aims to determine the best combinations of both groups of active ingredients on crops and to optimize the production of RL and Lia from residual materials (lignocellulose, paper, PET).

Use of residual materials for climate-positive building materials

The project is investigating two approaches to producing climate-positive building materials. The first approach aims to reduce the carbon footprint of building materials by incorporating carbonates into flowable concrete and masonry bricks. Multiscale mixing reactor for efficient photocatalytic degradation of trace substances and organics for improved water protection

Persistent trace substances such as iopromide, carbamazepine or PFAS are more difficult - or impossible - to eliminate from wastewater using the established methods for trace substance elimination, activated carbon adsorption and ozonation, than with advanced oxidation processes (AOP) based on highly reactive OH radicals. The project is developing a new type of catalyst that allows activation with higher-wave radiation (AMO). This can increase the penetration depth into the water.
